Would you like to scrap or recycle your electric car? Maybe you would like to upgrade your hybrid vehicle and are wondering about the best next steps. Or perhaps your electric car has been damaged in an accident and is no longer roadworthy? Whatever your situation, there is a growing number of electric and hybrid vehicles on the roads, so it is natural that this question is coming up more frequently as they make their way to scrap car yards and vehicle dismantlers.

When it comes to electric car scrapping, it is essential that you seek the support of scrap car experts. Scrapping an electric vehicle is more complex than dismantling petrol or diesel cars because the battery will need to be removed safely. All modern electric vehicles use a lithium-ion, and some hybrids use a nickel-metal hybride battery. These can be harmful to the environment and the people who are handling them.

Here at Car Scrap Surrey, we are scrap car specialists who run an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). All cars are scrapped in line with guidelines set out by the Environment Agency. We have specialist training involved in scrapping electric vehicles, including dealing with batteries and have the relevant certification to work with electric cars.

Electric cars can be recycled

Many parts of electric and hybrid vehicles can be recycled, including tyres, glass, and interiors. All batteries from electric vehicles can also be recycled carefully because they comprise a number of components that need to be dismantled differently.

Batteries contain a number of heavy metals and chemicals that cannot be easily recycled. When scrapping electric cars, there are a number of risks involved, including the risk of electrocution or fire. Electric cars have up to 800 volts flowing through them, so you must always seek expert help.

Batteries can eventually be repurposed for a number of products, and some of the metals can be recycled. We will issue a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) to prove you are no longer the vehicle owner.

What documents do I need to scrap my electric car?

As with other cars, you will need your V5C or your vehicle’s logbook. This will prove that the car you are about to sell for scrap belongs to you. We also ask our customers to bring their vehicle service history, such as old MOTS and receipts, proof of identity, and the vehicle’s keys.

What people say about Rick

4.6 from 19 reviews on Google

“Great service, easy, friendly and efficient. I helped an elderly friend to scrap her old car from an awkward location with limited access. The car had a seized clutch so couldn't move under it's own power, or so I thought, but Rick had an impressive trick to get it moving, and it took barely 5 seconds to get it down the drive and straight up onto his flat-bed truck. A sight to behold!!”
Stephen D., Google review
“Professional, Courteous and Quick. Rang on a Monday for a Weds pickup (which suited me), I'm sure pick up could have been same day if I had wanted it. Rick arrived exactly when he said. Good price received and car put onto pick up, V5 all completed and car gone within 5 mins. Rick we a joy to deal with. I would thoroughly recommend Rick and SSC...”
Michael K., Google review
“So impressed with how quickly everything was sorted! We had a lot of scrap metal left over from building work and Ricky was here in a flash. No problem with anything at all, he just took everything. Saved us so much effort than having to go to the dump, and we got some money too!”
